The deployment is one of the first uses of AI-driven robotics in DHL Express sortation operations. The Singapore South Hub processes time-definite international shipments for Southeast Asia. What the Robot Does and How It Works

The Dorabot unit is a stationary robotic arm mounted on a platform above a conveyor belt. Two cameras and a depth sensor scan each item as it passes underneath. The system identifies dimensions, weight, and shipping-label position, then calculates the optimal grip point and suction angle.

The gripper uses multiple suction cups that adjust independently to conform to irregular shapes: soft packaging, polybags, and padded envelopes. The arm swings the item to one of several chutes arranged around its base, each feeding a different outbound route or destination zone.

DHL Express faces labor shortages in many hub markets, particularly for night shifts and roles that demand long hours standing. Singapore, where logistics unemployment has been below 2 percent since 2021, is a tight labor market.

The robot addresses a specific bottleneck: inbound sortation, where shipments arrive from multiple origins and must be separated by destination before outbound loading. Manual sortation at this stage requires staff to read labels quickly and place items onto the correct belt. Error rates climb after the first hour of a shift, and throughput drops. The Dorabot system maintains a consistent pace across shifts and does not need breaks.

DHL Express has not released the robot's error rate or uptime percentage. The operation said the system has been reliable enough to run without a dedicated technician on site, though Dorabot provides remote monitoring and support.
