Difference from the Terminal 5 Passenger Pods

Heathrow's driverless passenger pods, manufactured by Ultra Global PRT (now part of Blue Solutions), have operated since 2011. They carry people, not luggage. They run on a dedicated guideway between Terminal 5 and a business car park. The pods are small, hold four people, and are called on demand.

The autonomous luggage carriers were not pods on a guideway. They were free-moving machines designed to operate on the airfield or service roads, not on a dedicated track. They carried baggage, not people. The two systems share the concept of driverless operation but use different technology and serve different purposes. The luggage carrier trial was not an extension of the pod system.

Stated Goals and Outcome

The trial aimed to test whether autonomous luggage carriers could reduce baggage transfer times and cut the number of vehicle movements on the airfield. Fewer movements could lower emissions, reduce congestion and improve safety. The trial was also intended to gather data on the reliability and safety of autonomous units in a real airport environment.
