AWS Local Zones Expansion: 32 New Cities Across 26 Countries

AWS completed its planned launch of 32 Local Zones in 26 countries from 2022 to 2024. Full city list, use cases, and competitive edge analysis.

Amazon Web Services finished rolling out 32 new Local Zones across 26 countries. The first zones opened in 2022, the rest followed through 2023 and 2024, and the service is now generally available in every announced city. AWS Local Zones are an infrastructure deployment that puts compute, storage, database and other select AWS services close to large population centers, industry clusters and IT hubs. The goal is single-digit millisecond response times for users who cannot justify a full AWS region.

The expansion targeted cities with strong developer communities and enterprise demand that sat too far from the nearest AWS region for latency-sensitive tasks. Each Local Zone extends a parent AWS region, so users keep the same APIs and tools while gaining local execution. The rollout spanned Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, marking AWS's largest single expansion of edge infrastructure by geographic scope.

The 32 Cities and Countries

The full list of 32 new Local Zone cities spans 26 countries. Europe gets the deepest coverage: Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt (Germany); Milan (Italy); Paris (France); London and Manchester (UK); Stockholm (Sweden); Oslo (Norway); Helsinki (Finland); Copenhagen (Denmark); Warsaw (Poland); Prague (Czech Republic); Dublin (Ireland); Brussels (Belgium); Amsterdam (Netherlands); Zurich (Switzerland); Madrid, Barcelona (Spain); Lisbon (Portugal); Vienna (Austria); and Athens (Greece). In Asia: Taipei (Taiwan); Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam); and Manila (Philippines). Latin America: Quito (Ecuador); Montevideo (Uruguay); and San Jose (Costa Rica). The Middle East: Muscat (Oman) and Doha (Qatar). Africa: Nairobi (Kenya) and Lagos (Nigeria).

AWS chose these cities based on proximity to dense populations, industry clusters and IT hubs. Many lacked a nearby AWS region, forcing users to route traffic across borders and absorb 20 to 50 milliseconds of latency. The Local Zones shrink that to under 10 milliseconds for most use cases.

Target Workloads and Use Cases

Real-Time Media and Interactive Applications

AWS designed the Local Zones for jobs that demand low latency but not the full service suite of a complete region. Real-time gaming, live video streaming and augmented and virtual reality sit at the top of the list. Media and entertainment companies use Local Zones for video transcoding and content delivery close to audiences. Financial trading applications run on the same infrastructure to cut execution time.

Industrial and Automation Workloads

Manufacturing firms and industrial operators run machine learning inference at the edge for quality control and predictive maintenance. Local Zones also support systems that produce large volumes of data on site, such as Internet of Things sensor arrays and autonomous vehicle testing. Keeping computation near the source slashes bandwidth costs and avoids hauling raw data across long distances.

Healthcare and Data Residency

Healthcare organizations process medical imaging locally, satisfying data residency mandates. AWS offers a subset of services in each Local Zone: Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) and Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS). Available instance types and services vary by zone.

Competitive Positioning Against Edge Offerings

How AWS Differs from Microsoft and Google

AWS's Local Zones expansion puts it head to head with edge infrastructure from Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Microsoft offers Azure Edge Zones, which tie into its content delivery network and 5G partners. Google provides Distributed Cloud Edge, a hardware-based solution that runs at customer sites or in colocation facilities. The sharpest contrast is operational: AWS Local Zones are fully managed and operate as extensions of existing regions, whereas Microsoft and Google require customers to manage more of the stack themselves.

Geographic Reach and First-Mover Advantage

The 32 new zones give AWS more edge locations than either competitor in the announced cities. Google's edge presence concentrates in North America, Europe and parts of Asia. Microsoft's edge zones cover about 20 cities worldwide. AWS's push into secondary cities such as Quito, Muscat and Nairobi creates a first-mover advantage: for organizations that need local execution in those markets, AWS is the only major cloud provider offering a managed edge service. That advantage shrinks in cities that already host a full AWS region, where the latency benefit of a Local Zone is smaller.

Enterprise Adoption and Partner Commitments

Manufacturing and Automotive Deployments

Several enterprise buyers and partners committed to the new Local Zones during the rollout. AWS announced that Volkswagen, BMW and Siemens were testing or deploying computing tasks in European zones. Volkswagen used Local Zones in Germany for real-time quality control on its factory floors, processing camera images locally to spot defects within milliseconds. BMW ran simulation jobs for autonomous driving development. Siemens deployed industrial IoT applications for predictive maintenance across plants.

Telco and Media Partnerships

Telecommunications companies also adopted the zones. Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom partnered with AWS to offer edge computing services to their business clients, pairing 5G connectivity with local execution. In Asia, media companies including Tencent and ByteDance used Local Zones in Taipei and Manila for video streaming and gaming workloads. AWS withheld specific revenue and usage figures for the new zones but stated that adoption exceeded internal projections within the first year of general availability.
