In October 2022, Amazon permanently ended field tests of its Scout autonomous sidewalk delivery robot. The Scout robot was developed inside Amazon's Lab126 hardware division, the same unit that produced the Kindle, Echo, and Fire devices. It was designed to navigate walkways autonomously, carrying parcels from a local delivery hub to a doorstep. Amazon positioned the robot as a supplement to its van delivery network, not a replacement. The economics and customer reception never lined up. By October 2022, the field tests were halted, the dedicated team of about 400 employees was disbanded, and the hardware was retired.

Amazon never published technical specifications for the Scan-and-Deliver feature, so it is not possible to say whether it involved scanning a barcode on the parcel, a QR code on the recipient's phone, or something else. The business did not announce any plan to repurpose the hardware for other projects, such as its Astro home robot or Zoox autonomous vehicle subsidiary. The Lab126 division, where Scout was developed, continued to work on other hardware efforts, including the Astro robot and the latest Echo devices.
Intellectual property
The fate of the intellectual property is less clear. Amazon may have retained patents and software from the Scout program for use in other autonomous systems, but the firm has not confirmed any technology transfer. The shutdown was a complete end to the program, not a pivot.
What the End of Scout Means for Sidewalk Delivery Robots
The competitive landscape
The failure of the Scout program does not mean walkway delivery robots are dead as a category. Other firms, including Starship Technologies, Nuro, and Kiwibot, continue to operate similar robots on university campuses, in downtown districts, and in limited residential areas. But Scout's shutdown is a significant data point. Amazon is the world's largest e-commerce firm and one of the most aggressive investors in logistics automation. If Amazon could not make walkway robots work, the bar for everyone else is higher.
Different economics
The key difference is that Amazon was trying to use Scout for residential delivery in single-family home suburbs. Starship and others have focused on compact service areas with high density, such as college campuses and business parks, where the robots can operate on short routes and deliver food rather than parcels. The economics are better when a robot can complete multiple deliveries in a small area and when the items are high-margin prepared food, not low-margin Amazon purchases.
Amazon's next move
As of October 2023, the position since the Scout shutdown is not established here. Amazon has not announced any new walkway robot program. The firm continues to invest in drone delivery through Prime Air, which targets a different use case: faster delivery over longer distances, bypassing walkways entirely.
